Re: The 25 Best Films of the 21st Century So Far. - The New York Times

In my last Filmchat, I forwarded to you a list compiled by the New York Times : "25 Best Films of this Century" (21st Century which means from 2001 - 2017).

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/06/09/movies/the-25-best-films-of-the-21st-century.html?action=click&contentCollection=Politics&module=Trending&version=Full®ion=Marginalia&pgtype=article

Among the 25 titles I was surprised to find 3 Chinese filmmakers made the list (2 from Taiwan: 侯孝賢 Hsiao-Hsien Hou、楊德昌 Edward Yang;one from China: 賈樟珂 Jia Zhangke)and more delighted to see two animated features included among the rank of greatness ("Spirited Away" from Japan and "Inside out" from US).

It appears to me that more and more foreign language films were nominated and made to the best film list in the past decade.  Maybe this is partly due to the fact that high tech
advances made easy for main stream Americans to come in touch with foreign movies, or the other way around.

Indeed this is yet another fine list of films : current, relevant and quietly inspiring.
I watched 14 out of 25 of them this time.  A few of them numerous times since some were used at my film club before, among them:  "Spirited Away", "Pam's Labyrinth", "Cache" and "A Separation".  While the Taida film club which I participated as editor member a while back, a few more on this same list were used at their screenings: "Children of Men", "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" according to my recollection.

I wouldn't say which list is better in their choice selection of current cinema greatness, people can choose their own for guidance or simply for reference.
