KV 265 “ Zwölf Variationen “ (1778)

from a letter to friend) I was here in Taipei early spring for more than two months.  Waiting for my brother who was to replace me on my post to serve his full 14 days quarantine.  Then 4 of my flights got canceled in late April and May I couldn’t leave until mid May.  During the last few weeks, I was terribly bored.  I couldn’t go anywhere and then when I got  the opportunity to try my hands on music composition, I simply grabbed the opportunity to do such simply to keep sane.

You probably didn’t know the arranger of my music (編曲) and project manager ( a nicer term for this tiny group ) is my brother Frank.

While he was locked in on the third floor of our apt. building I heard piano music coming through  the window routinely during those days.  I know he was just as bored as I was since he couldn’t even step out of the door.  In listening, I understood he’s either composing something or did music arrangement for other people.

So I began to get busy on the endeavor.  First by picking up a music phrase he’s working on, trying to make something out of it.  Being my first try in life in music composition yet it never dawned on me I should do this even though music is something I hold dearly to my heart.  What I wrote was named「不再織夢」, using a well-known American song’s lyric “ When I grow too old to dream “ translated into Chinese for the song.  It is now available on YouTube as well.

And the rest is history.  I have since
composed several pieces of songs and
wrote most of the lyrics with this piece
translated into Chinese from English (不再織夢)years earlier

(May, 2020)
